Year 7 Catch-up Funding 2018/2019 Evaluation

The literacy and numeracy catch-up premium gives schools additional funding to support Year 7 pupils who did not achieve the expected standard in reading or mathematics at the end of Key Stage 2.  In 2018 Hollingworth was allocated £13,984.  This money was allocated in the following ways:

  1. The TLR structure in English and Maths includes post of responsibility for staff, who are charged with monitoring and evaluating the progress of Year 7 catch-up pupils and to plan interventions.
  2. The interventions in English have included paired reading, Lexia sessions, Toe by Toe and guided reading.  Literacy lessons have focused on developing and embedding children's basic literacy skills, in order to ensure that they can access the wider school curriculum.
  3. In Mathematics, pre and post tests are used in all areas of the Mathematics curriculum to enable staff to identify and target under achievement.  This enables the school to target specific areas of weakness through after school catch-up sessions delivered by the TLR holder mentioned above.
  4. In addition, the Year 7 curriculum for lower ability pupils has a focus on developing the key numeracy skills which underpin the Mathematics curriculum.
  5. The impact of these strategies is reviewed and the results will inform planning for the following year.
  6. A literacy coordinator was appointed to coordinate the literacy catch-up sessions and offer further intervention and support in year 7 literacy sessions throughout the year.

Year 7 English TLR position


The post holder has an overview of progress for all Year 7 pupils and works to ensure that the appropriate interventions are in place and that the provision is monitored and evaluated.  The post holder also has responsibility for the school's timetabled Literacy lessons in Year 7.

Clear focus on Year 7 catch-up pupils to ensure that gaps were closed and that this group of children achieve the national expected grades.

Year 7 Mathematics TLR holder


The post holder monitored the results of pre and post tests and arranged appropriate after school intervention sessions to ensure that misconceptions were addressed.  The post holder also works with the Head of Department in developing a numeracy based curriculum for lower ability groups including "catch-up" children.

Year 7 catch-up children have areas of strength and weakness identified and addressed through intervention.

Learning and Progress Assistants are employed from 8.40 to 9.00am each day to deliver the various intervention sessions mentioned above.

Interventions targeted specific weaknesses and helped ensure that pupils made progress and that gaps are closed.

Literacy Coordinator


Coordinates literacy catch-up sessions and offered further interventions and support for year 7. Monitoring progress and reporting back to the Literacy TLR holders and the Sendco
